Behind the Glitterball: Shure's Wireless Audio Technology Shines on Strictly Come Dancing
LONDON, December 2024 – Strictly Come Dancing, the BBC’s iconic dance competition that has captivated audiences since 2004, relies on Shure’s advanced wireless audio technology to deliver crystal-clear sound, ensuring every step, note, and story resonates with viewers.
Filmed at Elstree Film Studios, Strictly Come Dancing pairs celebrities with professional dancers for dazzling weekly performances. Behind the sequins and spectacular routines lies an intricate technical setup, where audio plays a critical role in bringing the show’s magic to life.
Mastering Audio in a Challenging Environment
With its reliability and precision, the Shure Axient Digital Wireless System was the top choice for Terry Tew Sound and Light (TTSL), to manage the show’s intricate audio requirements.
“Elstree Film Studios presents unique RF spectrum challenges, particularly when touring artists arrive with their own equipment,” explains Jonathan Edwards, Head of RF for TTSL. To tackle this, the team provided over 72 receiver channels and 18 in-ear monitors for each show, navigating a landscape dense with LED screens, multiple broadcasting systems, and electromagnetic interference.
Shure’s cutting-edge equipment, including the AD4D Two-Channel Digital Wireless Receivers, Axient Digital handheld microphones, the AD600 Spectrum Manager, and the PSM1000 In-Ear Monitoring System, provided the perfect solution for the high-demand environment.
Innovative Tools for Unparalleled Sound
Richard Hawkins, RF Technician for TTSL, highlighted the seamless integration of Shure’s technology. “The AD600 Spectrum Manager and Wireless Workbench software gave us unmatched control and monitoring capabilities. Scanning and comparing RF environments across rehearsals and live shows keeps us ahead of potential issues, while real-time monitoring tools like WAVETOOL ensure adjustments can be made instantly.”
The TTSL team tested the new Axient Digital PSM In-Ear Monitoring System and found its performance impressive, delivering groundbreaking coverage. Hawkins remarked, “The noise floor was exceptionally clear—better than anything we’ve experienced in the studio. We are excited to continue using it.”
Shure’s Commitment to Excellence
Edwards also praised Shure’s ongoing support and dedication to the industry. “The team, including Peppe Mallozzi, Jack Drury, Stuart Moots, and Tuomo Tolonen, has been instrumental. Their training programs demystify the complexities of RF technology, enabling teams like ours to excel.”
Setting the Stage for the Future of Live Entertainment
The partnership between Shure and the Strictly Come Dancing production team exemplifies how advanced audio technology can elevate live entertainment. From capturing the emotion of every dance to the precision of every musical note, Shure ensures the magic of the show is experienced by millions.
