Stadsschouwburg De Harmonie, one of the Netherlands’ leading cultural venues, has taken a major step forward in audio performance with the installation of a new L-Acoustics L Series sound system in its 458-seat Rabozaal auditorium.

Opened in 1995, the Harmonie welcomes a wide range of events – from intimate theatre to high-energy concerts – with the Rabozaal often transforming into an 850-capacity standing venue. To support this versatility, technical partners Fairlight (L-Acoustics Certified Provider Distributor) and Mertens AVR delivered a complete audio upgrade centred on compact L2D line array systems.

The result is a powerful yet precise solution, combining exceptional speech intelligibility with detailed musical reproduction. “The system delivers the audio experience modern audiences expect, with consistent coverage in every seat,” comments René van der Linden of Fairlight.

Within its first weekend of operation, the system proved itself across three contrasting events – an ’80s guitar festival, a cabaret show, and an international soul act – each earning praise from visiting engineers for even coverage and clarity.

Key factors in selecting the L Series included its compact size, low visual impact, and sustainability credentials, with reduced materials and improved energy efficiency compared to legacy systems. Mertens AVR’s design also addressed the Rabozaal’s reflective architecture, using L-Acoustics Soundvision software to optimise coverage and minimise unwanted reflections.

The final system comprises L2D arrays with KS21i subwoofers, supported by A10s for stage and in-fill coverage, providing the flexibility required for seated, standing, and balcony configurations.

“The L Series was the clear choice, combining rider-friendly performance with environmental responsibility,” concludes van der Linden. “This installation ensures the Harmonie can continue delivering outstanding cultural experiences to audiences across Leeuwarden and beyond.”
