Auri improves assistive listening at St. Louis planetarium
A two-channel system gives visitors a choice of full show audio or narration only at the James S. McDonnell Planetarium.
The James S. McDonnell Planetarium in St. Louis has installed an Auri™ assistive listening system, developed by Ampetronic and Listen Technologies, to improve the experience for visitors with hearing loss at its Bill and Laura Orthwein StarBay Theatre.
The 80-foot dome hosts live, educator-led shows for around 150 guests, combining narration, music and sound effects. Its older assistive listening system had provided a limited experience, with the building’s concrete construction and mix of upright and reclining seating presenting challenges. The team wanted reliable coverage and a choice of the full show soundtrack or a separate narration-only feed.
A choice of audio feeds
After exploring options with SenseArt, the team selected Auri. The installation includes eight receivers, two docking stations and a two-channel transmitter with Dante® support. Visitors can listen using dedicated receivers, a receiver with a neckloop, or their own compatible devices.
The receivers’ compact size and simple two-button controls were key considerations. They illuminate briefly when the volume is adjusted before going dark again, helping preserve the theatre’s immersive environment.
The all-in-one transmitter also simplified the installation, while adjustable coverage gives the team control over the signal’s reach.
Positive feedback from visitors
According to the planetarium team, demand for assistive listening increased as soon as the system was introduced, with five or six guests requesting receivers on the first day. Visitors have since provided positive feedback on audio quality, including cochlear implant users listening through the available neckloops.
The team reports reliable performance within the concrete building, with no latency or signal dropouts.
Day-to-day operation has also been straightforward. Receivers automatically power on and select the correct channel when removed from their docks, reducing preparation for staff. Supporting visitors connecting their own devices remains a learning process as the team becomes familiar with different devices and apps.
The planetarium promotes the service through venue signage, pre-show slides, its website and online ticket information, helping visitors understand the options available before their show.
