NEXO and Yamaha bring new sound to Nashville landmark
A tailored audio installation at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop combines clear, consistent coverage with the flexibility needed for live music on Lower Broadway.
Nashville’s historic Ernest Tubb Record Shop has installed a Yamaha and NEXO sound system as part of a wider audiovisual project designed and delivered by Tennessee-based integrator Black Box AVS.
The brief was to create an engaging live music environment that respected the character of the building while supporting modern venue operations and an enjoyable visitor experience.
The long, narrow space, with exposed brick walls and wooden floors, presented acoustic challenges. With limited scope for extensive acoustic treatment, Black Box AVS focused on loudspeaker coverage, delay zones and precise system tuning to achieve consistent sound throughout the venue.
Yamaha CZR loudspeakers form the backbone of the installation, supported by front fills to maintain clarity for audiences closest to the stage. NEXO ePS Series loudspeakers provide additional full-range coverage, with selectable high-frequency directivity and flexible mounting options helping the team accommodate the space.
The installation also allows staff to manage front-of-house sound and lighting using iPads connected to central equipment racks. Integrated networking, wireless connectivity and lighting control support operations across the venue’s four floors.
Changes to stage layouts during the project required the main loudspeakers to be increased to 15-inch models. The completed system was tuned to preserve instrumental detail while delivering the output needed for live performances.
Martin Lawrence, owner of Black Box AVS, said: “People say it sounds great. It’s not super loud – you can hear the individual instruments.”
From the vinyl shop to the rooftop bar, the project demonstrates how careful system design can support live music within a challenging historic building, balancing coverage, clarity and ease of operation.
