Bespoke L-Acoustics Sound Systems Transform Ambience at LOA and Aki Restaurants
Malta – September 2024 – Two of Malta’s premier dining destinations have transformed their atmospheres with state-of-the-art L-Acoustics professional sound systems. LOA, a seaside venue with South American inspiration in St. Paul’s Bay, and Aki, an Asian fusion restaurant in Valletta, now boast immersive audio environments that perfectly complement their unique settings and cuisine.
LOA, located near the historic Wignacourt Tower, draws inspiration from the Río Loa River and the LOA goddesses. This bright, coastal venue offers a culinary journey through Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Mexico, blending vibrant flavours with Mediterranean charm. With stunning seaside views and a relaxed atmosphere, LOA has quickly become a favourite among both locals and tourists.
In contrast, Aki presents a sleek, modern take on Asian cuisine in Malta’s capital city. The restaurant, which is part of a franchise with a sister venue in London, combines Japanese, Chinese and Southeast Asian culinary traditions. Known for its creative food presentation and expertly crafted cocktails, Aki offers a sophisticated dining experience in the heart of Valletta.
Both venues required bespoke audio solutions to enhance their distinctive vibes, particularly as they transition from relaxed dining atmospheres to more energetic DJ performances in the evening. The DB Group, which owns both restaurants, sought a versatile, high-quality sound system that would enhance the ambience without overwhelming diners.
DB Group partnered with Black Box, an L-Acoustics System Integrator Partner in Malta since 2017, to bring this vision to life. After experiencing the impressive dynamic range and sound quality of L-Acoustics systems at the Black Box showroom, the project quickly moved forward.
One of the key challenges was the need for multi-zone setups, ensuring that both low-volume background music and high-energy DJ sets could be accommodated. David Zammit, Technical and Sales Director at Black Box, led the project, using L-Acoustics Soundvision software to model the acoustic environments of each restaurant. This precision ensured optimal speaker placement, giving guests an exceptional audio experience, no matter where they were seated or the time of day.
At LOA, the installation features 34 5XT coaxial enclosures and 10 SB15M subwoofers, providing even sound coverage both indoors and outdoors. Aki’s system includes six X4i and 12 5XT coaxial enclosures, six X8 coaxial point source speakers, and four SB15M subwoofers, catering to the restaurant’s various spaces, from the bar and lounge to the private dining room. Both setups are powered by L-Acoustics LA4X, LA2Xi, and LA12X amplified controllers.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with both restaurant owners and patrons praising the clarity and dynamic range, even at low volumes. This has greatly enhanced the dining experience, allowing conversation to flow freely while enjoying quality sound.

These installations have not only elevated the dining experiences at LOA and Aki but have also inspired other venues in Malta to explore premium audio solutions.
