The Cologne nightclub has upgraded its main floor with L-Acoustics DJ and an 8.1.7 loudspeaker configuration, creating an immersive 360-degree listening environment.

Cologne nightclub Bootshaus has marked its 22nd anniversary with a major upgrade to the sound system on its main floor.

The installation combines L-Acoustics DJ with an 8.1.7 loudspeaker configuration designed to provide spatial coverage around and above the dance floor.

Bootshaus opened in 2004 and now welcomes more than 200,000 visitors and 500 DJs each year. The venue says the investment forms part of its continuing commitment to sound quality and gives visiting artists new creative possibilities.

Creating new possibilities for artists

Niclas Aigner, Chief Operating Officer at Bootshaus, first experienced L-Acoustics DJ during Amsterdam Dance Event in 2025.

“When I heard L-Acoustics DJ at ADE, it was immediately clear that this was more than just another sound system,” he said. “The precision, impact and immersion were on another level, and I knew we needed that experience at Bootshaus.”

The spatial system allows elements of a stereo track to be positioned and moved around the room, enabling musical content to travel beside, behind or above the audience rather than being reproduced through a conventional left-right system.

From stereo to spatial audio

L-Acoustics DJ uses L-ISA Processor II processing together with Source Separate, L-Acoustics’ proprietary low-latency, machine-learning-powered technology.

Source Separate divides a conventional stereo DJ output into discrete stems in real time. Elements such as drums, bass, vocals and other musical content can then be positioned and moved independently within a spatial mix as the DJ performs.

The technology is designed to integrate with established analogue and digital DJ setups, enabling artists and sound engineers to introduce spatial effects without restructuring the original set or changing the source material.

A 360-degree system for the main floor

The redesigned system uses eight horizontal loudspeaker positions and seven overhead enclosures.

Flanking the DJ booth are two hangs, each comprising two A15 Wide enclosures above one A15 Focus. Six additional hangs, each combining one A15 Wide with one A15 Focus, extend around the sides and rear of the dance floor to complete the horizontal layer.

Seven X12 coaxial point-source enclosures provide the overhead height layer, while two A15 Focus enclosures serve as DJ monitors. Three LA7.16i amplified controllers provide amplification and loudspeaker management for the new system.

Together with the venue’s low-frequency system, the arrangement is described as an 8.1.7 configuration. It enables separated musical elements to be positioned around and above the audience, extending the experience beyond conventional stereo reproduction.
