London’s renowned Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club has selected Shure wireless technology for Upstairs at Ronnie’s, a newly redeveloped 140-capacity live music venue designed to complement the club’s famous downstairs stage.

The new venue offers a more intimate live music experience while expanding the range of performances that can be hosted alongside the club’s main programme. Designed for just 140 guests, every aspect of the room – from its acoustics and sightlines to the specification of its audio systems – has been carefully considered to maximise sound quality and strengthen the connection between performers and audiences.

To meet the venue’s demanding audio requirements, a fully digital Shure signal chain has been installed, incorporating Shure SLX-D+ Digital Wireless Microphone Systems and the Shure Axient Digital PSM Wireless Personal Monitor System. The installation enables a digital workflow from microphone to in-ear monitoring, with RF monitoring integrated via the venue’s Dante network.

The venue supports a diverse programme of live music, including jazz, classical performances, vocal showcases and the club’s long-running Cuban music sessions, providing a flexible performance space capable of accommodating a wide variety of artists and productions.

Technical Manager Charlie Dale explained that audio quality and reliability were key priorities throughout the project, particularly given Ronnie Scott’s intensive performance schedule of up to four shows per day for most of the year. The venue required equipment capable of delivering transparent sound for acoustic performances while also providing the flexibility needed for a broad range of live productions.

The installation benefits from Shure’s latest Axient Digital PSM firmware, including the new Single Carrier (SC) Narrowband transmission mode, designed to simplify RF deployment while supporting reliable wireless performance.

Since opening, the venue has received positive feedback from performers, with artists praising both the on-stage monitoring and front-of-house sound quality.
